What is ORCID?

  • ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an international non-profit company supported by numerous participants from research publishing and in the communication field (publishing houses, professional associations, universities, academies of science, research institutions, funding bodies and repositories).
  • The ORCID iD is an internationally accepted digital identifier for researchers, which establishes a direct connection between them and their research contributions. The ID is a unique and permanent identification number that researchers can use throughout their career to refer to their publications, projects, research data, etc.
  • The ORCID iD is institution-independent. As a primary ID, it links a variety of other existing personal IDs (Web of Science Researcher ID, Scopus Author ID).

What are your advantages?

  • Increased visibility of your research activitie
  • Better overview of your data in academic publishing
  • Better networking opportunities in academic communication processes
  • Minimal administrative effort after the successful set-up of a personal record
In publishing and on the Internet
  • With ORCID you can improve the visibility of your achievements and ensure all your research contributions are correctly attributed to you. Due to the permanent nature of the iD, it is possible to clearly identify you regardless of name variations, change of name and different spellings.
  • In the future, please only use your ORCID iD when communicating with publishing houses. Trustworthy publishing houses (trusted parties) can automatically access all the information they need.
  • Your research output will be clearly attributed to you and can be found in the ORCID record. This also applies if international databases do not list it.
  • You can use your ORCID iD and the related record throughout your life, regardless of your employer or research area.
  • Your list of publications will always be up-to-date, provided you allow trusted parties to make automatic updates.
Funding

You can reduce the administrative effort involved in the preparation of applications and reports for funding bodies and third-party sponsors by using your ORCID iD. You can give them access to your profile and the research contributions documented in it.
Since 2015, the ORCID iD is mandatory for applications for Austrian Science Fund (FWF) projects.

In everyday research

State your ORCID iD in your academic communication. Thus, you can efficiently provide colleagues, organisers and participants with necessary information via your ORCID record.

What are your rights?

  • ORCID is certified by TrustArc  and places great importance on data privacy. A legal expert report  of 2017 on behalf of the DFG found that ORCID could in many cases serve as a model.
  • You have full control over the data shown on your record and the persons who can access it.
  • You can decide which data in your record is visible to everyone, trusted parties or only me, except for your name and ORCID iD (both are always public).
  • You also decide which rights you grant trusted parties
  • You can manage, change and revoke these rights in your ORCID record at any time via account settings.

What should you consider when starting with ORCID?

Registration
  • Researchers should individually set up their ORCID record and grant permission to connect it to u:cris rather than delegate these tasks. The key reasons for researchers to do so are:
    - Respect individual privacy
    - Ensure the ORCID iD is correct
    - Trusted link between an individual researcher and an object (e.g. journal article)
  • Check if you do not have an ORCID iD yet. If you are not sure, search your name directly in ORCID.
  • Include any spelling variations and variants of your name in your record.
  • As a general rule: The more information you include, the more convincing your record will be.
Synchronising your publications

u:cris will become a trusted party when you grant it the necessary rights.
We also recommend granting the Web of Science (Researcher ID) and Scopus (Scopus Author ID) the same rights, if your publications are listed in these databases. Allow data exchange to these trusted parties.
In the databases Web of Science and Scopus, the ResearcherID and Scopus Author ID are primary identifiers for authors.

Register directly in these databases to grant them the status of a trusted party:

You can extend the list of trusted parties individually

Everyday usage

Please use your ORCID iD in connection with all your academic activities, especially in the communication with publishing houses, in funding, at conferences, on presentation slides and every time you can provide your ORCID iD on the Internet and in research forums.

What does the ORCID membership mean for the University of Vienna as an institution?

The University of Vienna has been a member of ORCID since June 2018. The university management recommends all researchers at the University of Vienna to register with ORCID.
Creating an ORCID record is voluntary.

The membership enables the integration between various services of the University of Vienna and ORCID. Therefore, the quality and efficiency of reporting and the visibility of the entire University of Vienna can gradually improve.

u:cris will be the first platform supporting the ORCID iD. This allows you to enhance your ORCID record by merging it with the information on u:cris without any additional effort.

Following the u:cris implementation, ORCID shall be made available step by step in other university systems, such as u:scholar and Phaidra.

By using ORCID, both you and the University of Vienna can benefit from the advantages mentioned above.
