OpenAIRE
OpenAIRE is a pan-European research information system, which provides services to find, store, link and analyse research output from all disciplines. The OpenAIRE project started as part of the FP7 programme (the European Union’s Research and Innovation funding programme) in 2009 and has already been run for three project periods. The fourth project period started in January 2018.
OpenAIRE aims at promoting and implementing the directives of the European Commission (EC) and the European Research Council on the promotion and funding of science and research. OpenAIRE supports the Open Access Mandate and the Open Research Data Pilot developed as part of the Horizon 2020 projects.
By initialising the OpenAIRE portal in 2010, it became possible for the first time to document EU-funded projects and their academic output in their entirety and present them to the public. Another important step was the establishment of the European repository ZENODO in cooperation with the European Council for Nuclear Research, CERN. This repository is available to academics as an all-round repository.
OpenAIRE is a pan-European meta repository with more than 60 partner institutions from all EU countries and beyond. There are local partners – national open access desks, in short NOADs – in all countries of the European Union as well as in Switzerland, Norway, Serbia, Iceland and Turkey. They represent the interests of OpenAIRE in the relevant country, answer questions, provide information or refer to other offices.
As a key European e-infrastructure for open science, OpenAIRE will make a valuable contribution to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). This Cloud aims at providing academics of all disciplines with open access to digital functionalities, resources and competences. Data are increasingly conceptualized as inherently valuable products of scientific research and research funders both on the international and on the national level increasingly require open data and good data management in the projects they fund.
In Horizon 2020, the European Commission ran an initial research data pilot scheme (ORD Pilot) which was extended to the whole programme as of the work programme 2017. A key component is the obligation to create a Data Management Plan (DMP). In recent years, the objective to make data not only open but FAIR, findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable, has been gaining prominence as an important principles for such DMPs.
The aim of this project is therefore to analyse DMP Use cases to identify best practices but also common challenges and mistakes amongst a number of use cases across different disciplines. The goal is to use these examples to support researchers with their DMP obligations throughout their own European projects. The results will also be reported in a publication.
The project is part of the OpenAIRE-Advance Projects RDM Task Force Group.
